Then the geyser erupts, a wave climbs the cliff, the pigeons land, and your three friends do exactly what they always do. You get the photo anyway, with a caption that says who ruined it.

Take one nice photo. How hard can it be?

Every trip gives you a roll of three shots and a brief for each one: everyone waving while the geyser erupts, everyone at the railing with the Pigeon Rocks behind you, a group hug with no pigeons in it.

    Set the timer.

    Look where you want the photo. The yellow wedge on the ground is exactly what the camera will see. Press E (or tap 📷 on your phone), the tripod drops behind you, and you have 10 seconds.

  2. 02

    Get in the shot.

    Run into the wedge. The live viewfinder turns green when you're in frame. Strike the pose the brief asks for: wave, peace sign, group hug, jump.

  3. 03

    The world ruins it.

    The geyser rumbles before it blows. The sea swells into a wall of water before it hits the railing. The pigeons strut before they go for your face. You always see it coming. That doesn't mean you can stop it.

    The album.

    Each photo gets a score and a caption that names who did what. Laughed? Send it to the group chat in one tap. At the end: best shot, blooper, a passport stamp and a trip postcard.

Every photo here was taken by the game's own tripod camera. Nothing staged. We couldn't stage this if we tried.

Failure is content.

  • Captions that blame people. Who was mid-air, who faced the wrong way, who was a ghost, who photobombed whom. Never the same joke twice in a trip.
  • Fair chaos. Every hazard is telegraphed. The geyser keeps a steady rhythm with a pressure gauge, and the sea swells before every big wave, so a perfect splash shot is a skill, not luck.
  • Bonus points for disasters. Someone launched by the geyser, floored by the sea, a pigeon wearing someone as a hat, a perfect photobomb: the photographer's choice bonus rewards the funny ones. There's a secret shot, too.
  • Send it to the group chat. One tap shares a card with the brief, the photo and the caption that roasts it: WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, anywhere. Or send the trip postcard with all three shots.

Is it free?

Yes. Say Cheese is an early prototype that runs in your browser, on your phone or your computer. No download, no signup.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Open saycheese.page and turn your phone sideways: a joystick under your left thumb, drag with the right to look, and big buttons for the timer, jump and the five poses. On iPhone, Add to Home Screen plays it full screen. On a computer: WASD to move, the mouse to look, E for the tripod, 1–5 to pose.

Can I play with my friends?

Online multiplayer is planned. Right now your friends are Zippy, Cheeky and Wobbly, and you can give them your friends' names on the start screen.

Why is it an early prototype?

We're testing one thing first: are the photos funny? If you play, tap the laugh button after each photo. It's how we decide what to build next.

Why do my photos keep going wrong?

That's the game. But watch the geyser's pressure gauge: start the timer as an eruption dies down and the shutter lands inside the next one. In Beirut, watch the sea: when it swells, get away from the railing (unless the brief wants you soaked).
